"Thank you to the Thank U Organisation and to all the supporters of children and their thirst for nurture and education. I am pleased, beyond the telling of I, by the countries of Ghana, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago. The decision to name the children's libraries in my honour, delights and humbles me. I am grateful."

Thanks to all you rainbows

All you rainbows in the clouds, thanks for coming along to the launch event. Everyone I spoke to was really positive about the Maya Angelou Libraries, I’m sure we can count on your continued support as the project moves on to the next stage.

And what a wonderful time we all had! Highlights for me include:

  • Dr Angelou’s video – wasn’t it so heart warming?
  • Watching Baronesses Amos and Scotland getting on down to the Revelation Choir
  • Siphiwo Ntshebe, loved the Zulu song
  • Everyone’s faces when the saxophonist started rapping – so unexpected!

We’ll get some photos from Saturday posted up asap and a few other Thank U staff, committee members and volunteers blogging so please visit the site regularly. In the meantime don’t forget to:

  1. Email all your friends and contacts
  2. Mention the project on all the online communities you visit (don’t forget to link to us)
  3. Post your comments
  4. And donate a little money – thanks!

Be amongst the highly exclusive audience at Dr Maya Angelou’s 80th birthday celebration on Saturday, 4th October 2008. Along with a select few you will hear her deepest thoughts and feelings on the occasion of the Launch of The Maya Angelou Milestone Children’s Libraries – in a big screen presentation she has created especially for those who attend the event. This is to show her deep disappointment that new medical advice has forbidden her to travel at this time. She will be expressing her thanks to each individual who shows their support of this important event in London by providing a signed copy of her poem “And Still I Rise”.

THE PROJECT

ThankU The objective of the Milestone Library Project is to establish a productive living monument in "2008, the Year of Reading", that combines the evening of the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade with the world renown literary icon, Dr Angelou's legacy of nurture, education and motivation, to help children lift themselves out of poverty through reading.

The buildings will be ecologically sound and sustainable, using low cost local materials and powered by solar energy. The design of a nature reserve on the grounds of the buildings, will help the children to learn about looking after their environment, whilst learning to read.
