The objective of the Maya Angelou
Milestone Library Project is to
establish a productive living monument in "2008, the Year of Reading", that combines
the evening of the 200th anniversary of the Abolition of Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade with the world renown literary icon,
Dr Angelou's legacy of nurture, education and motivation, to help children lift themselves out of poverty through reading.
The buildings will be ecologically sound and sustainable, using low cost local materials and powered by solar energy.
The design of a nature reserve on the grounds of the buildings, will help the children to learn about looking after their
environment, whilst learning to read.
All you rainbows in the clouds, thanks for coming along to the launch event. Everyone I spoke to was really positive about the Maya Angelou Libraries, I’m sure we can count on your continued support as the project moves on to the next stage.
And what a wonderful time we all had! Highlights for me include:
- Dr Angelou’s video - wasn’t it so heart warming?
- Watching Baronesses Amos and Scotland getting on down to the Revelation Choir
- Siphiwo Ntshebe, loved the Zulu song
- Everyone’s faces when the saxophonist started rapping - so unexpected!
We’ll get some photos from Saturday posted up asap and a few other Thank U staff, committee members and volunteers blogging so please visit the site regularly. In the meantime don’t forget to:
- Email all your friends and contacts
- Mention the project on all the online communities you visit (don’t forget to link to us)
- Post your comments
- And donate a little money - thanks!
Sadly Dr Angelou won’t be able to attend the launch event on October 4th (due to ill health) but she’s taken the time to record this message for us.
At the launch and fundraising dinner and dance you will have the opportunity to record your personal video message to Dr. Maya Angelou.
Auction Prizes!
Auction Prizes include: A signed and framed poster of Maya Angelou, 3 days at the David Beckham Football School, Tea and Tour of the House of Lords amongst others.
Maya Angelou recorded a video for the pre-launch event held earlier in the year. View it here.
We’ve used Wordpress, made modifications to an Adii template, added some useful plugins (I really like WP-Sticky), included the payment processing pages, added the content and now it’s ready. Ready for all the main players to talk about the Maya Angelou Libraries project, how it’s progressing, what issues they’re facing and how everyone can chip in.
Of course it’s not all done on the web front. As well as maintenance and updates (Wordpress 2.6 is available! Please notify the site administrator) we’ll be needing to promote the site online to get as much attention to the project as we can.
